स्वयं को चिकनी चमेली से ता'आर्रुफ़ कराने वाली यह सुंदरी मदिरापान छुप के करती है ... यह भारतीय समाज में स्त्रियों के मदिरापान को हेय दृष्टि से देखने की वजह से उनकी छुप के मदिरापान करने की विवशता को भी दर्शाता है ... ये भी मुमकिन है कि ये सुंदरी अपनी मदिरा को किसी और के साथ बांटना नहीं चाहती ... बहरहाल ... इस दौर में जब भारतीय क्रिकेटरों को चिकने हाथों (butter fingered) वाला कहा जाता है , इस सुंदरी के आपादमस्तक (नख-शिख) चिकने होने में भी अमूल मक्खन का योगदान होने की सम्भावना से इनकार नहीं कर सकते ... इसका एक तात्पर्य ये भी है कि सुंदरी ने मदिरापान कर के अपनी मादकता बढ़ाने का प्रयास किया है... वस्तुतः उसे इसकी ज़रुरत नहीं होनी चाहिए ... अगर ऐसा है तो यह उसके आत्मविश्वास की कमी दर्शाता है... गौरतलब है कि अपने पूर्व (शीला ) अवतार में ये सुंदरी आत्ममुग्धता की शिकार थी... ख़ैर आगे चलते हैं ...

अपने चेहरे के नमक से बंजर बस्ती में मस्ती लाने का दावा करने वाली ये सुंदरी आशंकित है कि इसकी नीयत पे चढ़ने वाले का गहरा रंग इस पर न गिर/टूट/चढ़ जाए ... कैंची जसी जोबन (यौवन का तद्भव ) से तमाम पर्दों को काटने की क्षमता रखने वाली यह युवती यक़ीनन बहुत प्रतिशील विचारधारा का अनुसरण करती है जिसमें पर्दा और हिजाब का विरोध करना सर्वथा उचित है ...अगले वाक्य में अपनी अकेली शाम की बात से उसने 'भरे शहरों में तन्हाई बहुत है' की पुष्टी की है ... शामों को बांटने की बात कर के सुंदरी ने pare & share की अपनी मंशा ज़ाहिर की है... इशारे से सुंदरी तिजोरियों को तोड़ने और लूटने की लोगों की इच्छा बढ़ाती है ... ऐसी सुंदरियों के आग्रह से हमारे समाज में क़ानून-व्यवस्था के लिए संकट उत्पन्न हो गया है ... फिर चूम कर ज़ख्मों पर मलहम लगाने की बात करती है... इसके दो तात्पर्य हैं ... १. ये हमारे समाज में hygiene की उपेक्षा करने की प्रवृत्ति दर्शाता है...२. उपचार की ये विधि अगर सफल होती है तो ये हमारे देश के pharmaceutical उद्योग के लिए भारी खतरा साबित हो सकती है .

दिवसावसान का समय -
मेघमय आसमान से उतर रही है
वह संध्या-सुन्दरी, परी सी,
धीरे, धीरे, धीरे,
तिमिरांचल में चंचलता का नहीं कहीं आभास,
मधुर-मधुर हैं दोनों उसके अधर,
किंतु ज़रा गंभीर, नहीं है उसमें हास-विलास।
हँसता है तो केवल तारा एक -
गुँथा हुआ उन घुँघराले काले-काले बालों से,
हृदय राज्य की रानी का वह करता है अभिषेक।
अलसता की-सी लता,
किंतु कोमलता की वह कली,
सखी-नीरवता के कंधे पर डाले बाँह,
छाँह सी अम्बर-पथ से चली।
नहीं बजती उसके हाथ में कोई वीणा,
नहीं होता कोई अनुराग-राग-आलाप,
नूपुरों में भी रुन-झुन रुन-झुन नहीं,
सिर्फ़ एक अव्यक्त शब्द-सा 'चुप चुप चुप'
है गूँज रहा सब कहीं -
व्योम मंडल में, जगतीजल में -
सोती शान्त सरोवर पर उस अमल कमलिनी-दल में -
सौंदर्य-गर्विता-सरिता के अति विस्तृत वक्षस्थल में -
धीर-वीर गम्भीर शिखर पर हिमगिरि-अटल-अचल में -
उत्ताल तरंगाघात-प्रलय घनगर्जन-जलधि-प्रबल में -
क्षिति में जल में नभ में अनिल-अनल में -
सिर्फ़ एक अव्यक्त शब्द-सा 'चुप चुप चुप'
है गूँज रहा सब कहीं -
और क्या है? कुछ नहीं।
मदिरा की वह नदी बहाती आती,
थके हुए जीवों को वह सस्नेह,
प्याला एक पिलाती।
सुलाती उन्हें अंक पर अपने,
दिखलाती फिर विस्मृति के वह अगणित मीठे सपने।
अर्द्धरात्री की निश्चलता में हो जाती जब लीन,
कवि का बढ़ जाता अनुराग,

Political stability gone for a toss

This has been one heck of a year so far. Across the globe we have had popular uprisings against some regimes in power since the time I came to understand my alphabets. Arab spring is all too emphasized. But Eurozone has also been witnessing instability, which is more in the nature of economic but political repercussions of which can not and should not be ruled out. Fingers crossed here. South Asia has also had its share of political instability. Pakistan has well and truly become a failed state. Zardari, Gilani & Co has no control over what's happening in their a-blast-a-day country. Nepal has got yet another new PM. Indian UPA Government has compromised on Indian democratic traditions to ensure it continues in power. Sri Lanka and Bhutan have been pretty stable. But of course, there is no democracy in the two countries. Sri Lanka is officially a democratic regime while Bhutan has a kingdom. But interestingly, Bhutan is much more democratic than Sri Lanka. The big question to ponder is: Is this a desirable situation? Most of the countries where regimes have been overthrown are now mired in anarchy. International help (read interference) has not helped either. It's upto the citizens of these countries to unite and give themselves a sane leadership sans any help from the international community (the USA etc.)

Suicide

Very often one comes across cases of people committing suicide because life has not treated them well enough. One news item suggests, there is a spurt in such cases of late, at least in Delhi. This is true in other parts of India also. However, in a bizarre case a couple committed suicide in Goa because they were content from life. It is disturbing for two reasons: 1. Everybody wants to be content with life. But does it lead to repulsion from life? & 2. Is early-30s right time to be content with life?

I believe that suicide is not a solution; it's plain escapism. I think that जीवन मृत्यु से हमेशा श्रेष्ठतर है . And as Javed Akhtar puts it

ख़ुदकुशी क्या दुखों का हल बनती

मौत के अपने सौ झमेले थे .

We see around ourselves and find so many people talking on so many issues & non-issues, creating nuisance, running errands and still find energy to live on. Lokpal becomes a 'tamasha'. Women reservation bill becomes a tamasha. everything, virtually everything is reduced to a tamasha. Fast-unto-death (FUD) tamasha. BTW FUD has become quite a fad these days. And I have noticed every politician tried to convince Ramdev not to sit on FUD except our Agriculture Minister. He perhaps thinks this is the best way to address the problem of food security. A well-scripted tamasha at times, at other times a bad-mouthed tamasha. Digvijay Singh is suffering from a perennial 'oral diarrhea'. With Amar Singh out of action these days he has little competition there. Rahul Gandhi is trying to catch up though. His theory of murders & rapes in Bhatta-Parsaul has not been supported by the empirical evidence. Kapil Sibal has perfected the art of speaking lie while looking in your eyes. He thinks there was no loss to public exchequer in 2G spectrum case. Perhaps he wants us to believe A Raja has opted to take a sabbatical to Tihar leaving the arduous task of running business in Sanchar Bhawan to ever-so-reliable Kapil Sibal. Ramdev's deputy is very naive & scribbles something on a paper. Just to ensure that 1-billion plus Indians know who is Ramdev's mahamantri he gives it to Mr. Sibal, who dutifully flashes it to media. Delhi Police with a slogan of 'with you for you always' finds that Ramdev & his FUD followers chose to create a stampede in their sleep at 1 AM. Delhi Police justified its slogan by helping them in this as well. Worse, Ramdev gets unwell in Haridwar & finds himself beaten in this noble act by the person in room next to his. He actually fasts until death. FM Pranab da finds himself out of news for 2 weeks & gets to look at Mr. Sibal everytime he switches on his TV. The nine-months old security breach in his office gets revealed. Dr MMS keeps maintaining his dignified silence. BTW The only thing common between Digvijay Singh & dignity is the first 3 letters. Ms. Gandhi is on a fact-finding mission abroad about how people can stash away their black money there. Waise, Ramdev's emphasis on black money parked abroad is in line with the Swadeshi Movement. Domestic black money should not be abhorred, only that in the Swiss Bank.

My take on Mahabharat

१. महाभारत में कौरवों के चरित्र को 'धर्म का विरोधी' रंग दिया गया है. पांडवों को कौरवों की तुलना में संस्कारी बताया गया है . कौरवों के बिगड़ने का एक संभावित कारण है उनके माता-पिता. पिता

जन्मांध थे, माता ने विवाहोपरांत आँख पर पट्टी बाँध ली . परिणाम यह हुआ कि कौरव parental guidance से वंचित रह गए.

२. कर्ण को हमेशा सूत-पुत्र कह कर उसके साथ विभेदात्मक व्यवहार किया गया . यह द्वापर युग में जाति पर आधारित समाज की पुष्टि करता है . ये भी ज्ञात होता है कि तात्कालिक समाज में २१वीं सदी के भारत की तरह ही meritocracy नहीं थी . गुण पर वंश को तरजीह मिलती थी. दुर्योधन ने इस रुढ़िवादी परंपरा को तोड़ते हुए कर्ण की प्रतिभा को उसका सही मूल्य प्रदान करते हुए उसे अंग नरेश बनाया. ये उस युग के स्तरीकृत समाज (stratified society) में एक क्रन्तिकारी क़दम था . कर्ण का दुर्भाग्य यह कि उस युग में उच्च वर्ण के युवाओं को न पढ़ाने वाले परशुराम ही केवल यह पहचान सके कि कर्ण उच्च वर्ण का युवक है .

३. द्रोणाचार्य उच्च कोटि के धनुर्धर और योद्धा और सर्वोत्तम गुरु माने जाते रहे हैं. मेरी दृष्टि में द्रोण बहुत धूर्त और मक्कार व्यक्ति था. एक , उसने चक्रव्यूह का पाठ अपने समस्त विद्यार्थियों को नहीं पढ़ाने की सोची थी. यह ज्ञान सिर्फ अपने नालायक पुत्र को देना चाहता था . अर्जुन तो केवल संयोगवश वहां पहुँच गया और उसे यह विद्या overhearing के कारण मिली . ये भी एक संयोग ही था कि उसका बेटा कमअक्ल था वो नहीं सीख पाया, और अर्जुन चतुर था उसने यह विद्या सीख ली. दो, द्रोण ने जातिवाद को भरपूर बढ़ावा दिया. कर्ण के प्रति उसका रवैया खेदपूर्ण तो था ही , उसने एकलव्य को भी अपनी दकियानूसी सोच का शिकार बनाया. तीन, द्रोण एक लोभी व्यक्ति था. उसे अपनी दक्षिणा में बहुत दिलचस्पी थी. जो आर्थिक रूप से कमज़ोर थे उनसे भी कोई रियायत नहीं . एकलव्य का उसने अंगूठा कटवा दिया . अतः द्रोण बर्बर भी था. द्रोण वस्तुतः आधुनिक education mafia का द्वापर युग का अवतार था. पांडवों के साथ सहानुभूति होते हुए भी उसने कौरवों के तरफ़ से युद्ध लड़ा . असल में वो हमेशा सत्ता के करीब रहा . don't rub powers-that-be on the wrong side का एक अनूठा मिसाल थे द्रोण. विडम्बना ये कि कलयुग में द्रोण के नाम के पुरस्कार दिए जाते हैं .

४. द्वापर युग के भारत में जलस्तर बहुत उंचा था. जब रणभूमि में भीष्म शय्या पर लेटे थे और उन्हें प्यास लगी तो अर्जुन ने अपने तीर से ज़मीन के अन्दर से जल की धरा प्रवाहित कर दी. तात्पर्य यह कि सिर्फ २-३ फीट की गहराई पर जल उपलब्ध था . आज के दौर में तो भीष्म प्यास के मारे मर जाते और उनका युद्ध live देखना संभव नहीं हो पाता .

५. भीष्म ने अम्बालिका और अम्बिका का अपहरण कर उनका विवाह अपने सौतेले भाईयों से कराया . इस से दो बातें ज्ञात होती हैं : एक , भीष्म के दोनों भाई राजघराने के होते हुए भी eligible bachelor नहीं थे . दो , यह समाजशास्त्र में उल्लिखित राक्षस विवाह का सर्वप्रथम उदाहरण था. एक और गौरतलब बात ये कि अम्बा भीष्म पर मोहित हो चुकी थी. किन्तु भीष्म की ज़िद/ प्रतिज्ञा के कारण उसे अविवाहित रहना पड़ा . यानि भीष्म ख़ुद एक eligible bachelor थे.

Suppression of female sexuality is complete in Islamic society and justified in the name of sharia. The most recent example of this comes from Bangladesh, where a teenage girl was subjected to 70 lashes leading to her death.

The Clerics must realize that the opinion of non-Muslims about Islam is based on what Muslims do. I wish Muslim Clerics were sane.

हँसी,

हमारी हँसी- कुछ बरस पहले तक कितनी बेसाख्ता हुआ करती थी,

जब लोग हमको नादाँ कहते थे

दानिशमंदी की पहचान है शायद सलीके की हंसी..

सलीक़ा- जो पूर्वनिर्धारित है , पूर्वपरिभाषित भी,

हमारी हँसी हमारी अपनी हुआ करती थी,

इसको छोड़ कर हमने औरों की दी हुई

दानिशमंदी और सलीक़ा

अपने ऊपर ओढ़ ली है .

हँसी,

औरों की हँसी,

अब साज़िश सी नज़र आती है

गुज़िश्ता दौर में

जो हमें अपने रंग में रंग देती थी

दर्द ,

हमारा दर्द,

अब भी होता है

लेकिन हमने सीख ली है

उसको छुपाने का हुनर ...

दर्द,

औरों का,

हम बेनियाज़ हो गए हैं जिससे ,

ये बेहिसी भी एक सलीक़ा हो गोया ...

The major ammunition in the hands of secessionists are stones. India is a country full of stones, with its history steeped into stone age!! But these Kashmiris (only the muslims actually because all the Kashmiri Pandits have been forced out of the valley) have turned the clock back and Kashmir is witnessing yet another stone age. Worse, they have hired migrant labor to soil their hands in stone-pelting.

It's a shame our Hon'ble (?) PM is talking of autonomy to Kashmir. And then on 15th August he claimed "Kashmir Bharat ka abhinn ang hai." I don't remember how many times I have heard this crap from how many Hon'ble PMs ever since I came to understand 'abhinn ang'. Now whenever MMS & his colleagues in the Cabinet speak of 'abhinn ang' I am reminded of this couplet by Javed Akhtar

Bradmanesque loss

I am a big cricket buff. I have grown up listening to the fact that Sir Don Bradman is the cricketer without peer. His statistics are awesome. However, I have always believed he's overrated. 1) He played in an era when only two teams were familiar with the concept of competitive cricket- England & Australia. No wonder Bradman always had field day against all other teams, India included. 2) All the good bowlers of his era were from his own team e.g. Bill O'Reilly & CG Grimmett. The only exception is Harold Larwood of England. 3) He got enough rest due to WW-II. Perhaps his consistency is because of no cricket during war years.

In this post I would like to share an interesting info on Bradman. He was a member of the team which suffered the worst loss in terms of runs. This was his debut test match. Have a look at the scorecard.

Very few sporting events evoke such anticipation as 19th Commonwealth Games have done. Usually the anticipation is regarding who will be the fastest on track or will Indian shooters bring heaps of gold medals. But this time there is more anticipation or speculation on whether these Delhi will successfully hold the games. The rains have not helped either. The way things have gone so far, it's gonna be a disaster. I guess we should give the job of organising Games to National Disaster Management Authority.

How tough was the World Championship match against Anand?

Physically the match was not so difficult. Twelve games are not so many and there were many rest days. Knockout format is much tougher in this sense. Mentally of course, the tension was very high, but it is also true that top chess players are used to pressure.

According to some reports, it seems Anand was helped by Kasparov, Kramnik and Carlsen for the match. Your comments.

I do not think Anand should be very proud of this. Especially by the fact he accepted help from the first two. I have been among the chess elite for 15 years and perfectly remember how Kasparov treated Anand for years. And not long before the World Championship match in Bonn 2008, Anand had to stand the arrogant statements of his opponent in the press. I would never accept help from people who humiliated me for years even for free. But it seems Anand is different.

Do you think you have got enough recognition for your stance of not accepting draws and making the game uncompromising and more entertaining?

Yes, I think so. Since the Sofia rules (no quick and agreed draws) were invented by my manager Silvio Danailov back in 2005, the results are very positive. Sponsors liked them and new tournaments appeared. Media interest for chess has grown up and prizes increased. For winning the world title in 2005 I received $300,000 and five years later Anand got $1.5 million. This speaks for itself.

Do you think Anand is the most complete player?

Yes, that is something no one can deny. Also, he has been a Rapid World Champion, very strong in blitz play and one of the best blindfold players in the world.

What are your thoughts on Anand?

I think being a world champion is a great responsibility. He has to collaborate with FIDE and attract new sponsors to chess. But Anand does not have a professional team behind him and has failed to find sponsors. India could be a paradise for chess, but the fact that he has not played a single tournament in India since 2002 can only mean two things: either Anand does not like to play in India, or his team is not capable to stage a top level event.

Read an interesting article by Joshua I. Miller in Polity, Vol 37(1), 2005. The abstract reads as below:

Clothing has political significance because it affects the relationships among citizens. Clothing is not simply a private or personal matter; it implies the existence of an intersubjective social world in which one presents oneself and is seen by others. In examining the implications of fashion for political relationships, I will concede that fashion aggravates antagonistic relationships among citizens when it is used to flaunt one’s status and wealth, but I will also argue that clothes can also be used to exhibit respect toward others and allegiance to a group. Clothes, therefore, sometimes facilitate the democratic ideal of widely distributed power. Fashion can provoke dialogue about social and political matters, and that dialogue

is democratic. When fashion manifests creativity, respect, allegiance, or membership, the relationships that it fosters are potentially democratic.

To see the democratic dimension of fashion, one must begin by realizing that dress is embedded in the social world. While dress involves individual expression, that expression does not occur in isolation. A tale of two assassinations

Recently, two reports have come into news- 1) the SC verdict awarding life sentence to Manu Sharma in Jessica Lall murder & 2) the UN Report regarding inquiry into Benazir Bhutto's political assassination of Dec, 2007.

Some observations:
1) It takes so long to bring to justice a murderer like Manu Sharma in India. This despite it being a high-profile case which continued to grab headlines for so many years. It's a shame on Indian Police & Judicial system.

2) Pakistan could not conduct a discreet inquiry into assassination of Ms. Bhutto even with Mr. Zardari at the helm of affairs. Somehow, I have this feeling that Mr. Zardari was not pained enough by the killing of his wife. His fling with Ms. Sarah Palin is a proof.

3) Even if UN Commissioners report is believed to be true, one wonders whether the present regime will be able to convict the culprits.

Such a sad commentary on governance in the two midnight's children. Note that in both the cases politically powerful people are behind the murders.

Punjabi parantha and Hyderabadi biryani can never mix

Amidst all the hype surrounding Shoaib-Sania marriage I came across this interesting story in The Indian Express today.

The news piece is reproduced below:

Delhi, Kolkata and Ranchi-based daily, Akhbar-e-Mashriq, in a witty editorial (April 4) says what may be a revelation to many: “It is interesting that Imran Mirza, the father of Sania Mirza, had, following the breaking up of Shoaib Malik’s engagement with Ayesha, also of Hyderabad, said: ‘Sialkot and Hyderabad! No, no! Punjabi parantha and Hyderabadi biryani can never mix’. It’s an irony of fate that Sania, daughter of the same Imran Mirza, is getting married to Shoaib Malik. It seems a relationship of co-existence between Punjabi parantha and Hyderabadi biryani has been established and now Shoaib and Sania would savour both eatables simultaneously.” In a somewhat similar vein, Bangalore-based daily, Salaar, in its editorial on March 31, writes: “When both will be playing for their respective countries, then obviously they would have acute shortage of time. There would be pressure on the marital life.” It adds: “The PCB has inflicted a ban for a year on Shoaib Malik and he would have ample time during the year. But Sania Mirza will be busy preparing for the forthcoming Commonwealth and Asian Games.”

I guess Imran Mirza is now suffering from the disorder memory-loss.

Beauty & electoral success

In one of my earlier posts I had mentioned an article published in AER on 'Beauty & Labour Market'. Recently I came across a similar article in Journal of Public Economics by Niclas Berggren, Henrik Jordahl and Panu Poutvaara. The title is 'The looks of a winner: Beauty and electoral success'. The abstract provides a summary of the findings:

An increase in our measure of beauty by one standard deviation is associated with an increase of 20% in the number of votes for the average non-incumbent parliamentary candidate. The relationship is unaffected by including education and occupation as control variables and withstands several other robustness checks.

Now we understand why so many film stars are fielded by the political parties. We have many cine beauties as our Hon'ble MPs these days, e.g., Hema Malini, Jaya Prada etc. And who can forget Sarah Palin, who floored Zardari Sahab with her "gorgeous" looks. If only the Republicans could have staved off the Democrats' march. I guess the beautiful persons must be saying "Yes, We Can."

Tax to curb smoking

This column finds that policymakers in developing countries could reduce cigarette consumption by youths by raising taxes. A 10% increase in the price will reduce youth cigarette demand by 18.3%.

We also find our Hon'ble FMs keeping a high tax rate on cigarettes. But i think the smokers hardly care about the tax rates. At least my brother, Guddu bhaiya has never bothered about it.

For a change we have hockey news making headlines on the sports pages... that too for right reasons. Yes India beating Pakistan was a good news. But I believe this was a contest between two of the slowest movers on the turf. Anyways... a win is a win and we must savour it.

I have always been overawed by the skill and artistry involved in hockey. No doubt the FIH World Cup being held at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium is a great thing for all the Indians. An interesting trivia here is that cricket and hockey both had their biggest names playing at the same time. Yes Sir Donald and Major Dhyanchand dominated their chosen sports during the inter-war years. Alas! We have so many paeans for Bradman, hardly any mention is made of Dhyanchand. BTW Hitler was mighty impressed by Major Dhyanchand's skills, which he witnessed during the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Dhyanchand's son Ashok Kumar also represented India in Olympics.

'Doosra' in cricket was invented by Saqlain Mushtaq and was later taken up by several off-break bowlers across the world. Doosra, apart from being a nightmare for the batsmen, has always been a controversial subject. Muralitharan and of late Johan Botha are among those who were reported for action and later told not to bowl doosra. I find it wrong so long as the bowler is not chucking. Telling a bowler not to bowl doosra makes him less potent. why can't ICC tell the batsmen not to play reverse sweep and its various other variants? Imagine a Dilshan being told not to play his 'dil-scoop' over keeper's head. It's a batsman-friendly world.

What is worse is that a former spin legend has advocated against doosra. His arguments are interesting and bizarre at the same time. I found his quote at cricinfo.
